Clough's figurative paintings of the late 1940s and early 1950s are regarded as her most sought after works. Focusing on the 'worker', Clough sourced her subject matter from factories and the docksides of Lowestoft and the Thames, transforming her mundane subjects into magical compositions. Margaret Garlake comments that Clough's depictions of dock workers, lorry drivers, engineers and fishermen 'reflect the dignity and value of labour' (see M. Garlake, New Art New World: British Art in Postwar Society, New Haven, 1998, p. 137).
