PSALMS -- Enchiridium Psalmorum. Ex Vulgata sive Septuaginta interpretum editione. Translated by Johannes Campensis (1490-1538). Paris: Martin Juvenis, 1565.
16° (117 x 76mm). Double column with Campensis's translation in roman and his more literal paraphrase in italic type. Woodcut device on title. A few small woodcut foliated initials. (First and last few leaves with marginal stain.)
BINDING: contemporary Parisian brown morocco for Jacques-Auguste de Thou [not later than 1587], sides with the arms of de Thou as a bachelor stamped in gilt, flat spine gilt-lettered and with the repeated cypher 'IADT' (upper joints cracked but firm); modern cloth box.

A FINE, BRIGHT EXAMPLE OF DE THOU'S FIRST ARMS. The Dutch philologist Johannes Campensis or Jean Van den Campen first published his paraphrases of the Hebrew psalms in 1532. Other versions followed in German, English, Flemish and French, the last being published by Etienne Dolet under the title: Paraphrase, c'est à dire claire translation, faicte jouxte la sentence, non pas jouxte la lettre, sur tous les Psaumes, Paris, 1534 and 1542; also at Antwerp, 1544. However, De Thou would undoubtedly have preferred this Latin edition by Martin Juvenis. Not in Adams or BLSTC French.
