Fine original drawing for Poor Cecco: The Wonderful Story of a Wonderful Wooden Dog Who was the Jolliest Toy in the House until He Went out to Explore the World, by Margery Williams Bianco (1881-1944). Poor Cecco, the third book by the author of Velveteen Rabbit (1922), first appeared in serial form in Good Housekeeping, beginning in May 1925.
This lively story describes the adventures of a wooden toy dog who, along with the other toys from a cupboard, goes on a series of adventures in search of a lost friend. Their interactions with each other and with the human, animal, and toy members of the world beyond it, whom they encounter on their quest for adventure and search for a lost friend, are depicted with understated humor. The relationship between the wooden dog Cecco, a natural leader, and Jensina, a highly independent and spirited wooden doll, is both subtle and funny.
The same text and illustrations were used in the first book edition of 1925, which contains seven mounted color plates and twenty-four drawings in black and white. This and the following lot comprise two original illustrations from the suite of seven full-page plates used to illustrate the story. Latimore and Haskell, p. 59. Riall, p. 155.
