RAMUSIO, Giovanni Battista (1485-1557). Delle Navigationi et Viaggi. Venice: Giunta, 1613-1583-1606. 3 volumes, 2° (306 x 210mm). Woodcut printer's device on titles, 10 double-page maps (3 copper engraved in vol.I, 7 woodcut in vol.III), 3 full-page woodcut maps and 5 illustrations, numerous smaller woodcut illustrations in the text, woodcut initials and ornaments, printer's device at end of vol.II & III. (A few small holes and tears, mostly marginal, some repaired, a few leaves slightly soiled.) Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt in compartments with brown and green lettering pieces (joints split, extremities rubbed, head and foot of the spines worn). Provenance: Luton Library (inscription). Sixth edition of vol.I (reprint of the 5th edition), third editions of vol.II & III. Most of the third volume concerns the American continent, including Cartier's first voyage, and reports by Verazzano, Cortes, and others; a fourth volume was to have been published before Ramisio death in 1557 but was never completed. The third volume contains the most numerous maps and illustrations depicting the natives of the American continent and exotic fruits and plants that were hardly seen in Europe, such as the pine-apple, maize, cactuses. Sabin 67735; 677380; 67742 list the three present editions as the most complete. (3)
