Lot Essay

This type of hanging shelves are conceived to place either in a canopy bed or on the side wall of a brick couch and could be used to store scrolls, books or any other small items.
A similar shelf such as our current lot is illustrated in the famous paintings of Twelve Beauties at Leisure painted for Prince Yinzhen, the Future Yongzheng Emperor, dating to the late Kangxi period (between 1709-1723), which depicts an elegantly dressed lady looking at a bronze mirror seated below a comparable scroll hanging shelf.
