This study of a stork resting, perched on one leg, can be dated to no later than 1907. In that year Bugatti exhibited at the Hébrard gallery a unique cast of two resting storks that brought together this model and a figure of a second stork, legs folded beneath him and his body rested on the ground. The birds faced one another on a long, more-or-less rectangular base (Des Cordes, pp.176-177). This two-figure cast entered the prestigious David Weill collection.
A self-portrait, published as the frontispiece to the Des Cordes book on the artist (p.8), shows him gazing at a stork perched on one leg, closely reflecting the pose of the present figure.

The presence of the letter M beside the signature and foundry marks identifies this as a reference cast destined by the founder Hébrard for exhibition (Des Cordes, p. 326). The firm of A.A. Hébrard served Bugatti in two ways. They were able to offer their services as a pre-eminent foundry, executing his models in bronze to the very highest standards, and as an exhibition gallery, playing an important role in bringing this work to the attention of the Paris and international art community.

This work will be included in the new edition of the Rembrandt Bugatti catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Véronique Fromanger and due to be published shortly.
