Lot Essay

According to Dr. Carol Hevner Soltis, a member of The Peale Paintings Project of the Maryland Historical Society, the present work is a "clear example of a type of fancy piece or studio piece produced by Rembrandt Peale from the mid-1840s through the 1850s. He produced a number of such works at this time which were evocative of European masterworks but were essentially images of his own."

A letter dated 29 March 1994 from Dr. Carol Hevner Soltis discussing the work accompanies the lot.
