Lot Essay

After his sojourn in the Netherlands from 1612-13, Remigio Cantagallina returned to Tuscany where he produced a large number of views of the campagna around Florence. This sheet is closely comparable to another 1618 dated drawing, which shows the outskirts of Florence, now in the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris (inv. 8688; J. Byam Shaw, The Italian Drawings of the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, 1983, I, no. 63, III, pl. 78) and another comparable Tuscan view was offered at Christie's, London, 10 July 2014, lot 110.
