Lot Essay

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Richard Alan Schmid is considered one of the foremost Impressionist painters of the late twentieth century. Schmid was influenced at an early age by his grandfather Julian Oates, a sculptor. Following his training at the Famous Artists Course and the American Academy of Arts in Chicago, Schmid joined the Palette and Chisel Academy in Chicago, becoming its president shortly thereafter.
Since 1958, Schmid has won many major art awards in the United States, including the prestigious American Watercolor gold medal and the John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement from the American Society of Portraits Artists Foundation (2000).
Schmid's paintings have been exhibited by: the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, the Colorado Historical Society, Denver, Colorado, The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois and the National Academy of Design, New York.
