RICHARD BADHAM THORNHILL

The Shooting Directory. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1804. 4to, 9 tinted aquatint plates, including portrait frontispiece, 3 folding letterpress tables. (Some light browning.) Tan calf gilt by Zaehnsdorf, triple fillet on sides, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco lettering-pieces, gilt edges (new endpapers). Provenance: G.R. Nicolaus (label with monogram on pastedown).

FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE, with pages 215 to 220 cancelled, cancellation noted in manuscript on p.214. The pages were cancelled because it is 'evident from the text that the author had been a little too outspoken over a controversy concerning the Manton Patent Breech, that arose between Mr. Maton and the Duke of Richmond'. Abbey Life 394; Schwerdt II, 258-259.

With another copy of the above, the FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, containing the later cancelled pages 215 to 220, 7 hand-coloured aquatints and one uncoloured plate only (lacking the 'Illustration of a Patent Breech', some spotting and browning, upper corner of Aa1-2 torn away), contemporary cloth (front cover detached); and Peter Hawker's Instructions to Young Sportsmen (London, 1816), second [first illustrated] edition.
