Prince Charles Edward Stuart, known as the Young Pretender, championed the Jacobite claim to the throne and engaged the Duke of Cumberland at Culloden Moor on 16 April 1746. The battle, which took place near Inverness, was the last staged on British soil. Prince Charles was defeated and retreated across the banks of the Nairne. The Protestant Hanoverian King George II remained King. Jacobite subjects provided favourite subject matter for artists of the Victorian period.
