Commodore Wager's Night Engagement with the Spanish

dated '1735' and with inscription 'It appears by the London Gazette from August 2 to Augus 5. 1708/That Commodore Wager in her Majesty's ship the Expedition: unassisted by the Kingston and Portland. Though under his command: A Hackd/and engaged Fourteen sail of Galleons with the following remarkable/success Viz: the spanish Admiral after an hourse fight with him blew up:/The Rear Admiral after an hours engagement was taken by him: one/other Galleon was run ashore; the rest fled;the commodore lost 14 men./the Spaniards go; after which the other two Captains were by a court/Martail Broke: This gentleman lived to be first lord commissr: of the/Admiralty: one of his majesty's cabt: Council and Admiral of the white squadn/and worthy of the high honours he wore: and died deserving that most valuable of/characters:The Freind of Human Nature'; oil on canvas unframed
