Demidoff, Villa San Donato (1813-1870, cypher and library stamp on half-title and section title, pressmark).

FIRST EDITION. THE PRINCE ANATOLE DEMIDOFF COPY. Gautier travelled to Russia in September 1858 -- the impressions he records in this volume predate his Voyages en Russie which was not published until 1866 and the fine albumen prints by Richebourg include views of St Isaac, the Palace of Maria Nikolayevna, the Imperial Palace and Arsenal of Tsarskoye Selo, and the monument to Emperor Nicolas I. Although the title page describes the work as containing 200 plates, only these five parts (containing 60 plates), were issued. Born in St. Petersburg to Baronne Elisabeth Stroganoff, Prince Anatole participated in the construction of the railway system between Florence, Livorno and the northern boundaries and in 1840 was granted the title Prince of San Donato by Leopold II. An avid art collector and bibliophile, Anatole amassed a fine collection of old master paintings and his library numbered close to 40,000 books. S. Aubenas Des photographes pour l'empereur: Les albums de Napoléon III, Paris: Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2004, p.163, pl.114 (illus.); p.164, pl.115; p.165, pl.116.
