Lot Essay

Although born in London Robert Alexander Hillingford (1825-1904) studied in Dusseldorf and Munich. It is therefore not surprising that he chose the present subject for a picture.

The subject is derived from the book of the same title by Rudolf Erich Raspe (1737-1794) which was based on the exaggerated and fantastic stories of the retired army captain Hieronymus Karl Friedrich, Baron (Freiherr) von Munchhausen (1720-1797).
