Lot Essay

Born in Edinburgh, Hutchison was a popular painter of genre throughout his lifetime, exhibiting extensively at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute. Initially apprenticed to a seal engraver, Hutchison trained at the Art School of the Board of Manufacturers and The Royal Scottish Academy Schools, where he developed a self-assured, painterly technique. He is best known for his paintings of children by the seaside, a subject made popular by the painter William McTaggart (see lot 1).
