Lot Essay

Robert Griffier, son of the Dutch topographical landscape painter Jan Griffier, Senior, was born on 7 October 1688 in London where he built up a practice as a topographical and marine painter. Griffier became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1716 but had returned to London by 1727. His later landscapes suggest that he was influenced by Canaletto.
