Lot Essay
Born at Rattray, Perthshire, Herdman studied at the Trustees Academy between 1847 and 1853, where he came under the influence of Robert Scott Lauder (1803-1869). Between 1855 and 1856 he spent the best part of the year in Italy, painting Italian peasant scenes in both oil and watercolour. Herdman also had a flourishing practice as a portrait painter. A group of artist's portraits are now in the collection of the Aberdeen Art Gallery.
