Lot Essay

Beginning his career in the teens, Robert Laurent was exposed to the European Modernist sculpture included in the famous Armory Show of 1913. Laurent was greatly influenced by European Modernism and subsequently became one of the foremost American sculptors to utilize the radical method of direct carving in wood and stone.
