Lot Essay
Born in Glasgow, Robert McGown Coventry gave up his early career as a mercantile designer to enter Glasgow School of Art. He later studied under Bougereau and Robert Fleury in Paris before returning to Glasgow where he exhibited regularly at the RSA. His early works show the same influences as Lavery but he soon turned to landscape subjects often painted at Loch Fyne and later in Holland, Egypt and Portugal. He was closely associated with artistic life in Glasgow and his watercolours show the influence of the 'blotesque' technique of the Glasgow School.
