Lot Essay

Conceived by the Chilean artist Roberto Sebastian Matta, Margarita and Sacco Alato were to be key inclusions in Dino Gavina's 1971 influential 'Ultramobile' project. With numerous collaborators, the collection playfully subverted the interpretation of everyday objects by enhancing their scale and converting their medium, which in the case of these works were adaptations of found objects - an oil barrel and a sandbag - that Matta had observed discarded in a foundry, to deliver monumental totems that celebrated the poetics of surrealism.
