Robyn Denny, born in Surrey in 1930, is one of a legendary group who transformed British art in the late 1950s, leading it into the international mainstream. He studied at the Royal College of Art in the mid-1950s.
The present work is a strong early work dated 1960, created at the same time as the paintings he produced for the Situation exhibition at the RBA Galleries, London, in September 1960. In the 60s he developed a range of work which explored both space and modes of perception. Denny became one of the most prominent British painters of the 1960s and was included in London: The New Scene, 1965-66, at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, which toured the United States and Canada, and Five Young British Artists at the British Pavilion at XXXIII Venice Biennale in 1966.
