Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Luuk Pijl and Mr. Kervyn de Meerendré for independently confirming the attribution to Roelant Roghman on the basis of transparencies. Roelant Roghman is generally considered to have been a pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam, but his style is closer to that of his uncle Roelandt Savery, whose work he was familiar with. His oeuvre includes a number of drawings, paintings and etchings, principally forest views and mountainous landscapes, as seen in the present lot. There are only approximately 35 fully-attributed paintings given to Roghman, all undated and therefore have tended to be categorised and tentatively dated on stylistic grounds.
