This is one of Van Vries's most ambitious landscapes and perhaps the largest panel painting he ever executed. If his landscape style is normally indebted to Jacob van Ruisdael, the tone and general mood of the present picture are more reminiscent of Meindert Hobbema and his large scale landscapes of the 1660s.
