Lot Essay

"This work was probably one of those exhibited at the Galerie Jeanne Bucher in Paris in 1950. The gallery was closely associated with the lyrical 'paysagisme abstract' of the Jeunes Peintres de la Tradition Francaise, whose characteristic adoption of a grid structure across the canvas, penetrated by bright and earth tones, was a clear influence in these years on Hilton, as it was on another Briton in Paris, his friend William Gear."
