Lot Essay

Rolex aficionados refer to the present watch as the Triple 6, a transitional Rolex that is a perfect example of the evolution of the much appreciated Sea-Dweller collection.

The Sea-Dweller reference 1665 was introduced in 1967 and was in production until 1980. It was born out of a collaboration between Rolex and the French diving company Comex and as essentially a diving watch it housed the patented helium escape valve, a thick-profile crystal, and a 2000ft depth rating.

The Sea-Dweller 16660 is the successor of the 1665 and was produced from 1978 to approximately 1988. The Triple 6 housed new and improved features such as an upgraded faster beat caliber 3035, a larger and improved helium escape valve, a flat sapphire crystal, and an unidirectional bezel. This transitional Rolex has all the improved attributes that make it easy to wear while still retaining the highly sought after vintage style.
