Lot Essay

The present pink gold reference 6062 is a superb discovery to the world of Rolex collectors as it has never been offered at auction before, nor described or illustrated in literature. Bought by Gordon Bethune directly from an estate, this example impresses with all the attributes the most demanding Rolex collector could ask for. In fact, this "stelline" is a specimen from the rarest and most sought after version, namely being cased in pink gold and featuring the ultra-rare star dial. Furthermore, it is now offered from the second family ownership, and a close examination of this watch in each element confirms that indeed it must be regarded as one of the most original, purest, and best preserved examples in the world. The dial is in superbly original condition, retaining its subtle grainé finish, but also the original printing throughout. Furthermore, the luminous hour markers, but also the luminous material on the hands, appear to be original and have, with time, taken a warm and charming mustard tone. It is also important to mention that the apertures for the month and weekday indication are sharp and angular, a feature which is regrettably lost when such a dial is refinished.

The case, now for decades displaying an obvious dark oxidation {which of course could be removed very easily} is one of the fullest and closest to factory finish we have ever seen on the market. Most probably, it has not been polished since new, and the case lines are excellently preserved, both on the upper side of the case, but also to the back. In fact, the screwed case back retains its original satin finish and so is the case preserved underneath the lugs. The numbers in between the lugs are stunningly crisp, and so are the pinholes, proof of how seldom the watch was worn and how rarely, if at all, the bracelet was changed. Lastly, this reference 6062 also retains its original "super oyster" crown, a most meaningful feature to the educated collector.

Examples of this trophy model in such perfectly original condition, in the most sought-after case material and dial combination, and so crisp after 60 years, are dreams for the most educated Rolex collectors in the world and constitute an opportunity not to be missed.
Examples of the reference 6062 are illustrated in 100 Superlative Rolex Watches by J. Goldberger, pp. 138-152
