Lot Essay

Offered by the current owner, a private Japanese collector, who acquired the watch approximately 25 years ago, this iconic Rolex Daytona reference 6263 with Paul Newman panda dial represents one of the great “barn find”, fresh to market pieces that has come to auction in recent years.

With a case that shows deep lug holes, sharp edges and lustrous brushed finish to the top of the lugs, the watch also retains its original mark 1 pushers, mark 1 bezel, original crown bearing only the coronet, correct 7835 folded link Oyster bracelet with matching 271 end links and a date code for the second quarter of 1971 and case back stamped 6239 inside, a feature of many early screw pusher Daytonas including the legendary RCO (Rolex Cosmograph Oyster).

In addition to having all the lume plots in place, a true bonus is the changing of the colour of the subsidiary dial for the 30 minute recorder into a tropical caramel shade. This watch exemplifies the matching all-over patina that collectors crave and provides an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire this iconic model from a long term ownership.
