Lot Essay

Román Ribera moved to Paris in the late 19th Century where he became influenced by the work and social circle of his fellow artist Raimundo de Madrazo. He was facinated and inspired by the lifestyles of the wealthy Parisians, who provided an endless range of subjects for the new generation of artists. This present work is an accomplished and complex composition showing the fine costumes and carriages of the rich, returning from a Ball, in contrast we see the ordinary folk on the street watching the spectacle, on a rainy morning.
