Two rare early photographs: Portrait photograph of Eleanor Roosevelt in her wedding gown, holding a large bouguet of flowers, by Pach, New York, 1905. 123/8 x 9½ in. including wide mount (image 7 x 4½ in.), mount slightly dusty, small tear at top margin. A very rare, beautifully detailed image of the youthful bride, whose wedding to Franklin D. Roosevelt was celebrated on 17 March 1905, after a secret engagement of a year, in spite of Sara Delano's efforts to prevent the marriage. -- ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. Portrait photograph of Eleanor Roosevelt with her children, Anna (5 years old), James (3½) and Elliot (9 mos.), Hyde Park, New York, June, 1911. 10¼ x 7¾ in. including mount and gray brochure covers, depicting the seated mother, the infant Elliot on her lap, with Anna and James seated alongside her, INSCRIBED BY FDR: "for Bammie," on outer cover and with the date of the photograph and names and ages of the children in ink. Together two items.
Provenance: Given by FDR to "Bammie" ("Auntie Bye," Mrs. William Sheffield Cowles, a sister of Theodore Roosevelt); later given back to Eleanor Roosevelt, in whose desk at Val Kill Cottage they were discovered in 1962 by John A. Roosevelt. (2)
