ROWLING, J. K. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. [London:] Bloomsbury, 1998. 8°. Half title. Original dark blue printed wrappers with central white band. UNCORRECTED PROOF, PRESENTATION COPY, the half title inscribed, "To Pat - Thank you [underlined] for liking this better! J. K. Rowling."
With a RARE PROOF OF THE DUST-JACKET for the first edition, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST CLIFF WRIGHT (whose name is mispelt 'Cliffe' on the lower wrapper), with variant blurb and press review on the front by Nicolette Jones, Children's Book Reviewer of The Sunday Times, which did not appear in the published version. In an email to the consignor, Nicolette Jones recalls how, having written a favourable review of Philosopher's Stone, she was sent a typescript of Chamber of Secrets to offer a quote for the cover but withdrew her suggested line -- 'A wizard story in every sense' -- as it had not yet appeared in the paper. She did subsequently use this phrase in a piece for The Sunday Times. (3)
