SAINT GEORGE
GREEK, 18TH CENTURY
The saint, attired in armour and flowingg cape, is mounted on a white horse and plunges his spear into the mouth of the winged serpent. The rescued princess is depicted in the background, whereas the blessing hand of God emerges from the clouds at the upper right corner. Although the landscape is depicted realistically, the sky is rendered with gold, according to the Byzantine tradition of icon-painting. What is iconographically interesting on this icon, is the depiction of the skull and bones in the foreground, the purpose of which is to remind the viewer of death. They have, in other words, the same function with the 'memento mori', which were frequently depicted in the contemporary Western paintings.
14 x 11½ in. (35.5 x 29.25 cm)
