Lot Essay

Born in Haarlem, the son of the painter Gillis Rombouts, Saloman was admitted into the Haarlem guild in 1678. A landscape painter, his pictures show the influence of Jacob van Ruisdael and more specifically Allart van Everdingen, who travelled to Norway and Sweden in 1644. Van Everdingen's contribution to Dutch Painting of the Golden Age is still somewhat overshadowed by that of Jacob van Ruisdael, to whom he introduced the theme of the waterfall. As in Van Everdingen's work, this painting depicts a waterfall in enclosed landscapes, highlighting the romantic spirit of the site.
