Half-title. 2 engraved vignettes, 34 engraved plates including 4 folding maps, the map of Abyssinia hand-colored in outline (marginal dampstain and some light foxing near edges and folds in some plates, 3 large maps linen-backed). (Very occasional light browning or spotting to text.) Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked preserving original spine). Provenance: Allan Library (ink stamp in margin of two text leaves).

FIRST EDITION. Salt went to Abyssinia in 1809 to establish contact with the King of Abyssinia on behalf of the British government. His account includes a lengthy glossary of local languages. Blackmer 1479.
