Lot Essay

One of a group of six head studies by Rosa drawn with colored chalks on brown paper (M. Mahoney, The Drawings of Salvator Rosa, New York and London, 1977, group 31). Another drawing of this type was in the Calvière sale at Christie's, Paris, 17 December 2003, lot 16. Mahoney dates the drawings to 1649-1660.
