SALVIANI, Ippolito (1514-1572). Aquatilium Animalium Historiae. Rome: Ippolito Salviani, 1554 (colophon: January 1558).

2° (407 x 260mm). Hand-coloured engraved title, 81 HAND-COLOURED FULL-PAGE ENGRAVINGS, SOME HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD OR SILVER (36 with versos blank) of 98 species of fish and marine animals by Nicolas Béatrizet, woodcut printer's device on verso of final leaf. (Title laid down, 35 leaves with old neat repairs, marginal in the main, but occasionally with loss, 26 of the engravings affected, some spotting or browning.) 18th-century calf gilt, g.e. (joints split, spine chipped at head and foot).

FIRST EDITION, ?third issue. Some leaves show traces of signature marks and numbering from an earlier, uncompleted, edition or an earlier arrangement within this edition. "The plates are good early examples of line engravings on copper, and closely follow nature. Salviani was primarily a systematist, but there are anotomical notes in the text" (Cole. History of Comparative Anatomy, p.485). The repairs were probably carried out when the work was rebound. Nissen ZBI 3555; Mortimer Harvard Italian 454; Adams S-190.
