The crucifixion of humanity powerfully depicts the destruction of Earth and humanity. Symbolised in the foreground are war and political propaganda, Christ, the Prince of Peace, rises on the cross to the background of an H-Bomb mushroom cloud. Sam was given a first-hand account of a nuclear mushroom cloud by Squadron Leader Morgan, who dropped an experimental H-Bomb on Christmas Island. Arguably Sam's most important work, this picture was painted to form a triptych titled The Prodigal World, together with lots 653 and 654.
