SASSOON, Siegfried (1886-1967). The Old Huntsman and Other Poems. London: Heinemann, January 1918. 8° (210 x 140mm). Original black cloth (upper cover marked). PRESENTATION COPY, the half title inscribed, 'To C. S. Evans from Siefried Sassoon. Nov. 30th 1917'.

SASSOON'S FIRST MAJOR COLLECTION OF POEMS, INSCRIBED TO HIS PUBLISHER, C. S. 'CHARLIE' EVANS, SHORTLY BEFORE SASSOON RETURNED TO THE TRENCHES AFTER LENGTHY CONVALESCENCE FROM BATTLE FATIGUE. The Old Huntsman and Other Poems, one of the key collections of poetry from the Great War, was first published by Heinemann in May 1917 and was reissued in August 1917 and January 1918. This book, inscribed just days after Sassoon was given clearance to rejoin his regiment in France, was presumably an advance copy of the third impression, hence the disparity in the dates. Keynes A15.

With 24 other books, many first editions, inscribed to C. S. Evans or his son, A. Dwye Evans, by John Galsworthy ('John Galsworthy of the English: wonderful the way the English keep their humour!'), John Masefield ('The consecrated things are wiser than our virtue'), Max Beerbohm ('Property of C. S. Evans'), Sinclair Lewis, Thomas J. Wise, Nevil Shute (2), John Dickson Carr (2) and others. C. S. Evans (c.1888-1945) joined Heinemann in 1914 at the invitation of its founder, William Heinemann, and went on to become the firm's Chairman and Managing Director. His son, A. Dwye Evans (1906-95), became a Director of the company in the late 1930s and remained with the group in various capacities until his retirement in 1973. (25)
