SENECA, Lucius Annaeus (54-39 B.C.). Seneca's Morals by way of Abstract. Translated by Sir Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704). London: W. Bowyer for Jacob Tonson, 1702.

8o (190 x 119mm). Engraved frontispiece by G. v. Casseel. Contemporary English gold-tooled red morocco by the Spaniel Binder, the sides panelled with massed small tools, including cherubs, fleur-de-lis and floral and vine tools, spine gilt in compartments, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (joints worn and discreetly repaired). Provenance: [Mrs?] Leigh April 17[88?] (erased title inscription); Leigh, modern bookplate.

A RESTORATION BINDING BY THE SPANIEL BINDER, incorporating his 'somewhat eccentric' (Nixon) tools of a winged cherub, and a small, multi-framed lozenge. He is so named for his spaniel tool, probably representing King Charles's spaniel, although Nixon doubted if any of his work dated to 1688 or earlier. Cf. Nixon, English Restoration Binding, 1974, p.41.
