Lot Essay

After her marriage to photographer Peyman Houshmandzadeh, Shadi Ghadirian began to receive domestic gifts from her friends and neighbours who were trying to encourage her to improve her non-existent culinary talents. This inspired her to create the 'Domestic' series. This assemblage included works that are mostly out of print. Shadi Ghadirian made several different versions of the assemblage, but this unique one, the first of its kind, was especially chosen and assembled for an exhibition in Barcelona, entitled Harem Fantaisies, and the New Shehrazades ( CCCB, Barcelona, 2003). This work then travelled from CCCB (Centre from Contemporary Culture of Barcelona) to Lyon, in France (see the Harem Fantasies catalogue). It also featured in a travelling exhibition in France for the Haft exhibition.
Some of the images were reproduced in magazines and books, the one with the red tea cup, for example, was illustrated in the Tate magazine.
