For a note on Sir Elijah and Lady Impey, their menagerie in Calcutta and the three artists they employed see lot 271 by Bhawani Das. Shaikh Zayn-al-Din was the most senior of the three painters, arriving in Calcutta three years in advance of Bhawani Das and Ram Das.

In the late 18th Century the collared dove was considered a rare and exotic species by the British, since it was found only in south-eastern Europe and Asia. Pairs began breeding in Britain in 1956 and it is now a familiar garden bird.
