Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for the attribution, on inspection of the original.
Simon Hardimé specialised in still-lifes of flowers and fruit, and studied under J.B. Crepu in Antwerp, becoming a master in the guild of St. Luke in c.1688/89. In 1700 the artist travelled to England, establishing a practice in London, remaining there permenantly from 1720 until his death in 1737. He was commissioned to paint pictures for various British aristocracy, including Lord Scarborough.
