Lot Essay

The sitter is the sister of the painter Alison Debenham (1903-1967). The portrait is recorded in Lett-Haines's Book of the Pictures as having been painted at 84, Charlotte Street in December 1935, a date confirmed by the sitter (see R.Morphet, Tate Gallery Exhibition Catalogue, p.110).
