D'Oyly was born in Culcutta but received his education in England. In 1798 he returned to India and lived in Culcutta until 1808 when he was transferred to Dacca to take up the post of Collector for the East India Company. It was in Dacca that he received lessons from the artist George Chinnery and it seems likely that he produced the present work in this period.
