FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY of 'this classic account of "heroic age" exploits' (Taurus). 'The books are handsome, and all aspects of the expedition are thoroughly covered. The text, as [the editor of the work, Archie] McLean prophesied, is short on style. Notable exceptions are the coolly detached but sensational description of the autumn blizzard conditions ... the description of hut life in winter ... and Mawson's own account of his dramatic and unlikely return to Cape Denison after the deaths of ... Ninnis and ... Mertz' (Rosove). Conrad p.208; Rosove 217.A1b ('Uncommon'); Spence 774; Taurus 100. (2)
