Lot Essay

'Maria' was the robotic 'heroine' of Fritz Lang's film 'Metropolis' (1927), one of Paolozzi's favourite films. In the 1990s Paolozzi made several variant portrait studies of her in plaster and bronze; some versions of which featured in the installation Paolozzi made for 'Spellbound', the Hayward Gallery exhibition (1996) about relationships between art and cinema. A bronze Artist's Copy and a plaster and wood version of 'Maria' are, or were until recently, in the sculptor's estate.
