Lot Essay

This drawing appears to relate to the right hand figure of an angel in Burne-Jones's Lancelot at the Chapel of the Holy Grail (Southampton Art Gallery, UK). Painted in 1896, this large and powerful easel picture was based on the fourth of the set of tapestries illustrating the Quest for the Holy Grail which Burne-Jones executed for William Knox D'Arcy in 1890-91.
