SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922)

Autograph letter signed ('Ernest Shackleton') to 'Captain Harvey', Marlborough Club, London, 28 April 1921, 3 pages, 8vo (a little spotted).

Arrangements for the Quest's berth. Shackleton has 'just returned from Canada and seen my little ship lying in the river (?) dock', where she has been 'placed ... for safety' by Harvey. Although Shackleton claims to be 'in active negotiations with the Admiralty about her transfer to Portsmouth', he asks as a favour if she can be left where she is 'until the arrangements are complete'; 'I shall be down shortly to see her again'.

Shackleton's trip to Canada had been made in the mistaken belief that the Canadian Government was willing to give him full financial backing for an Arctic expedition. In fact the intervention of his old school friend John Quiller Rowett was to take him, and his 'little ship' the Quest, south one last time.
