Lot Essay

The Last Load dates from Brangwyn's first journey to Cornwall in October 1887, where he developed his technique painting en plein-air in the harbours of Mevagissey, St Austell, Goran Haven and Fowey. Although the harbour is as yet unidentified, the colouring of the present work, along with the artist's use of space and the square brush technique, are comparable to his most important picture from this expedition, Fowey Harbour, Cornwall, sold in these Rooms on 27 November 2002, lot 29 (£182,650).

We are grateful to Dr Libby Horner and Professor Kenneth McConkey for their assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
