At the end of the 1890s pastel became Clausen's preferred sketching medium, and it was at this time that he began to use sketchbooks containing rough brown papers that had recently become available from artists' suppliers on which he applied a vivid colourful palette. Other studies of this type are in the British Museum and the Royal Academy.
