Lot Essay

Scott's second in command on the Terra Nova, Evans (Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell, first Baron Mountevans (1880-1957)) was not one of the successes of the expedition, but subsequently enjoyed a distinguished and celebrated naval career. He enjoyed the limelight and was painted by the fashionable portrait painter, Philip de Laszlo, in 1920. Kelly's finished portrait, if it ever followed the present sketch, is not recorded.
